Martin Kaymer Wins in Playoff at Whistling Straits, Dustin Johnson DQ
Posted on August 17th, 2010 No commentsThe PGA Championship ended with a playoff and some controversy.Going into the final hole, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Waston and Martin Kaymer were tied at -11. Dustin Johnson had a chance to win but was unable to make par. It looked to be a 3 way playoff. Enter the controversy.
After Johnson’s second shot on 18, it was noted that he may have grounded his club in a bunker. The area in question looked like a small worn out area. When the PGA officials reviewed the shot, it was determined that the area in question was in fact a bunker. This earned Dustin Johnson a 2 stroke and took him out of the playoff.
The three hole playoff went on with Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. Watson played an aggressive shot on the second hole which landed him in trouble. This opened the door for Kaymer. He put away his putt and won the 2010 PGA Championship.
On a side note, Dustin Johnson’s 5th place finish earned him a place on the Ryder Cup team.
